History
Ophthalmic Associates was founded in 1972 when Kenneth T. Richardson, MD left the chairmanship at University of Pittsburgh to return to Alaska. Nurse Karen Lowe and orthoptist Diane Armitage helped set up the initial office at 6th & K st. Additional doctors were recruited including Aharon Sternberg, Ed Crouch, Jan Nyboer, Scott Limstrom and Bob Rigg. The practice was moved to 542 West Second Avenue in 1981 just before the economic downturn.
Over the years, Ophthalmic Associates offered satelite clinics in Kodiak, Cordova, Wasilla, and Homer. Dr. Richardson continued active clinical glaucoma practice while teaching, producing one of the first electronic medical record systems, and consulting at Baylor University in Houston, Texas. Additional doctors who have been associated with O.A. include Bart Byers and Jack Nordlund. Ophthalmic Associates recruited Dr. Lynn Coon and then Evan Wolf, MD, PhD to the Wasilla satelite clinic and then helped them launch Valley Eye Associates.
Current physicians were recruited as follows: 1989 Dr. Robert Arnold- pediatric Ophthalmology, 1994 Dr. Carl Rosen- Orbit, Oculoplastics and Neuro-ophthalmology, 2002 Dr. Griff Steiner- Cornea and Anterior Segment, 2003 Dr. Elizabeth Morgan- Glaucoma, 2009 Dr. Matthew Guess- General Ophthalmology and Cataract Surgery. Ophthalmic Associates has also organized and sponsored the Alaska Summer Emergency Ophthalmology Program which provides expert and prompt service to Providence and Alaska Regional Emergency Systems.
