History
Ophthalmic
Associates (OA) was founded by Dr. Kenneth
Richardson in 1972. Over the years more specialty
and subspecialty doctors have joined OA. There are
now eight doctors who comprise our multi-specialty
eye practice in Anchorage and Wasilla with outreach
clinics in Cordova and Kodiak.
The US Air Force
brought Dr. Edward Crouch to Anchorage in 1972. Dr.
Crouch began practicing part-time at OA during this
tour of duty at Elmendorf Air Force Base. He
returned to Alaska in 1982 after spending five
years in private practice in North Carolina.
The first
optometrist at OA was Dr. Aharon (Ron) Sternberg.
Dr. Sternberg became OA's second full-time doctor
in 1976 moving here from Israel via Alabama and
Maryland.
Dr. Robert Arnold
became Alaska's first pediatric ophthalmologist
when he joined OA in 1989 after finishing his
residency in Ophthalmology at the Mayo Clinic.
Alaska's
first oculoplastics, orbital surgeon, and
neuro-ophthalmologist, Dr. Carl Rosen, moved to
Alaska in 1994 after finishing his subspecialty in
Pittsburgh.
Dr. Griffith
Steiner grew up in Anchorage and joined OA in 2002.
He is the only private practice corneal
subspecialist in Alaska.
Moving to Alaska
in the summer of 2003, Dr. Elizabeth Morgan will
become OA's eighth full-time ophthalmic specialist
with a subspecialty in glaucoma. She is currently
finishing her residency with Dr. Murray Johnstone
in Washington.
Over time,
certified medical personnel have been added to
complete the staff. These skilled registered
nurses, orthoptists, and certified ophthalmic
technicians perform examinations and patient
services assigned by the ophthalmologist with whom
they work.
Ophthalmic
Associates has evolved into a practice that
encompasses multi-subspecialties in the eye care
field. The practice specializes in comprehensive
ophthalmology and optometry, modern cataract
surgery and refractive surgery, pediatric
ophthalmology and adult strabismus, glaucoma,
orthoptics, contact lenses, neuro-ophthalmology,
orbital disease, and oculoplastic reconstructive
surgery.
Today, the
Anchorage
facility has argon and Yag lasers, microsurgery
suites, fluorescein angiography and slit lamp
photography, computerized visual field testing, A
and B scan topography, pre-school MTI®
photoscreening, and corneal topography. Ocular
surgeons, all board certified, have privileges at
Providence, Alaska Regional, Alaska Native,
Wasilla, Kodiak, and Cordova hospitals.
Ophthalmic
Associates' patient mission statement
reads:
Patients deserve personal, high quality, ethical
care. We assume that our patients want good,
comfortable, safe vision, or at least to understand
and prepare for eye disease of a progressive
nature. Since the eye can be a window to the rest
of the body, we shall strive to encourage the best
whole-patient care as directed by eye findings. We
shall strive to provide current, state-of-the-art
care and basic maintenance eye care which is
affordable. We will participate with agencies and
other doctors to implement preventive eye care for
Alaskans.
Welcome to
Ophthalmic Associates!
